OITL Song Of The Day #9: The Antlers "Two"

While Columbus will be hosting what should be a pair of solid shows tonight with New York folk rockers Alberta Cross playing The Basement and Chicago house DJ Bad Boy Bill playing BoMA, I will be heading up to Akron to check out Brooklyn indie rockers The Antlers play a headlining show with Annabel at Musica. The Antlers released a phenomenal and heartwrenching concept album in 2009 entitled Hospice, which ended up on numerous top 10 lists and affected nearly everyone it touched. Do not miss them if they come to your town or if you can make the show tonight. Here's my favorite track from the album and our song of the day, "Two".

OITL Song Of The Day #8: Four Tet "Love Cry"

English electronic artist Kieran Hebden a.k.a. Four Tet unleashed his first full-length in five years, There Is Love In You, this week on Domino and his delicious lead single "Love Cry" is our song of the day. The album is pretty fantastical as well.

OITL Song Of The Day #7: Joanna Newsom "'81"

Singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom has a lot of really passionate fans... And a lot of really passionate haters. A lot of this stems from her very peculiar voice as she's received pretty much universal critical acclaim for her instrumentation and art. You can imagine the uproar from all sides when she announced the long-awaited and much anticipated follow-up to her 2006 sophomore effort Ys would be a triple album entitled Have One On Me. So that's three times the excitement/anguish depending on who you are. I myself enjoy Ms. Newsom although I prefer her in shorter bursts of energy like the selections from her debut album The Milk-Eyed Mender. Still, I'm looking forward to the February 23rd release of new latest album via Drag City. Check out a stream of new track "'81" below and don't forget to grab your tickets to her March 29th show at the Southern Theatre if you haven't yet.

OITL Song Of The Day #6: Yeasayer "O.N.E."

Not many songs this year have excited me as much as "O.N.E." from Brooklyn psych-pop band, Yeasayer. It gets low and bursts with energy at all the right moments and provides both a heated dance song for parties and a sweet singalong for the car. It's the second single from the group's forthcoming sophomore album Odd Blood, which will be unleashed in stores on February 9th. Check out a stream of the new track below or a free download of it on their official site.

The National Reveal Fifth LP Due In May, World Tour Dates

Indie rock band The National, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, have become one of the most beloved independent artists in the world since they formed in 1999. Fans who have followed the group from the beginning have seen them steadily develop stronger musicianship and tighter live shows and leader Matt Berninger deliver sharper lyrics and expand his vocals. As they head toward the release of their fifth full-length album announced to drop this May via 4AD, everything points to their progression going even further. This is a monstrous task considering their last two records, 2005's Alligator and 2007's Boxer, were rated among the best albums of each year and topped several lists.

Local fans will remember that the band played a free Obama rally in 2008 at Cincinnati's Fountain Square with the Breeders and sold t-shirts with an Obama headshot above the title of one of the band's signature songs, "Mr. November". While no tour dates have been announced for Ohio yet, we can only hope one of the best bands making music this century will grace us with their enormous presence. And we'll be there to see it happen. See the band performing "Blood Buzz Ohio", one of the tracks rumored to be on the new record, below.

OITL Song(s) Of The Day #4: Toro Y Moi "Blessa", "Talamak"

Realizing OITL's first three songs of the day were heavy on the female vocalists, I'm giving a double dose of man today in the form of experimental pop/chillwave artist Toro Y Moi, who is slated to break out his debut album, Causers Of This, in stores next Tuesday. I've had this disc on repeat for all of January and it's the perfect mood setter next to the Winter weather.

The first video below is the first single, opening track, and music video from COT, "Blessa". Following that is my favorite song from the set, "Talamak". Enjoy!

Some lyrics from "Talamak":

"When can we get together again?
Nevermind, I've lost you

How can I tell if I love you anymore
Nevermind, I know I do

Call you closer to my arms
You'll feel better when you're warm

...

It's my body's plan.."

OITL Song Of The Day #3: Beach House "Norway"

Dream pop duo Beach House have been generating more buzz and greatly increasing their fanbase with each album since their 2006 self-titled album. Their third full-length, Teen Dream, lands in stores this Tuesday and has been widely considered their best yet. While some of the mainstream audiences that checked out their dazzling and beautiful single "Norway" when it was last week's iTunes Single Of The Week found it to be a little left of center, it's one of my favorite tracks of 2010 and will surely keep me coming back for a long time. Take a listen to our third song of the day "Norway" below.

OITL Song Of The Day #1: Sia "You've Changed"

Australian singer Sia Furler was chosen as one of the "Forty Under 40" in The Advocate's issue last Summer, but she's been on the radar for music fans over the last decade. Her vocals provided some of the most memorable moments from Zero 7's first three studio albums on songs like "Destiny" and "Somersault" and her solo career finally broke out with track "Breathe Me" from her 2004 record Colour The Small One and featured on the series finale of Six Feet Under. She will be unleashing her fifth studio album We Are Born in April and from it I present OITB's premiere Song Of The Day, the infectious, feel good, and dancey "You've Changed".

Weekend Out - January 22-24, 2010

With temperatures forecast to hit the upper 40s this weekend, it's hard to know what to blame the semi-"heatwave" on... Late Night wars? Tempers flaring over the Massachusetts election results? Hipster heads exploding from Vampire Weekend and Joanna Newsom shows coming to town on the same night?... But it's certainly welcome. It's a good time to get out in the city and experience the variety (Bears! Mardis Gras! Halfway to Pride! Oh my!) of LGBT special events and entertainment we have to offer.
